The Role of the Best Man

One of the tasks of the Groom when it comes to weddings is to pick a best man. So, just what is the role of the best man from a practical perspective?

Wedding ceremonies tend to be very tradition-oriented. These traditions apply to practically every aspect of the ceremony. They also apply to the roles played by certain individuals. One such role is the best man who is chosen by the groom. So, what exactly is expected of the best man?

Perhaps the most obvious duty of the best man has to do with the bachelor party. Specifically, he is responsible for arranging and paying for it as well as making sure nothing serious happens to the husband to be. This assumes, of course, that there is going to be one. Nothing can drive a wedge between a groom and bride like the idea of a bachelor party. Nonetheless, they often occur in one form or another whether the bride approves or not. If she doesn't, the best man quickly evolves into the hated one!

On a less notorious note, the best man is actually responsible for a variety of other things related to the wedding ceremony. Among these duties, he is responsible for getting the groom to the wedding. A strict interpretation of tradition suggests he should ensure this by spending the night with the groom the evening before the wedding. The best man is, obviously, also responsible for holding the wedding ring and presenting it at the appropriate moment of the ceremony. More than a few movies have been produced on this seemingly simple duty, particularly when the ring is lost. Finally, the best man is responsible for giving a speech at the reception for the bride and groom, yet another chance to become the hated one!

Being selected as the best man by a friend is a good and bad event. Most often, the central issue is the bachelor party. On one hand, the best man is responsible for showing the groom a good time. On the other, he risks the wrath of an angry and vengeful bride. Ideally, the issue should be worked out between the bride and groom, but often the best man just has to do what he thinks is right and live with the consequences.
